DZO JOURNEY – A STORY FULL OF PASSION & COMPASSION

THE WORD 'DZO'

HOW YOU PRONOUNCE the word 'DZO'?

It's J-O - DZO JOURNEY

The word Dzo originates from the Tibetan language and describes the male offspring of a crossbreed between domesticated cows and yaks.

Due to their parentage the Dzos have the ability to thrive in both high and low altitudes. Owing to their cow ancestry, Dzos are more active compared to yaks, while at the same time being well conditioned for the physical challenges of higher altitudes.

The people of the Himalayas rely on these animals as they have both the strength and stamina required to carry heavy loads for long, arduous journeys through rugged mountain terrain.

BIRTH OF DZO JOURNEY

Together with local partners, we founded a small Himalayan based company back in 2008.

All products have been created with a sustainable approach in mind that addresses the needs of those looking for authentic and environmentally conscious travel.

From the beginning Dzo Journey was focused on offering comfortable yet genuine journeys immersed in local environments and traditions.

Customers will enjoy journeys within a local environment as well as bring advantages of their culture to these remote locations.

As a local company, we measure success not only in profit, but in the benefits that the exchange of cultures, ideas and experiences bring to both customers and locals.

We work directly with local communities, providing farmers with seeds, and purchasing from them all of the food provided during our treks.

Based on our efforts it did not take a long time for us to become one of the leading companies in the Himalayas.

We are now poised to bring our work to the next level, and people back to a more responsible way of tourism.

DZO JOURNEY TODAY

Our profession has become our passion as we approach small scale travel as a viable alternative to mass tourism.

We now cover 4 countries, 6 regions and work with 14 dedicated local partners including the Dzos.

We support 20 self-sustaining families and are collaborating with 10 heritage hotels across our destinations.
