Three Passes Trek with Island Peak


The combination of the three majestic Himalayan Passes - Renjo La, 5360 m, Cho La - 5368 m and Kongma La, 5535m would not only takes us away from the main hiking routes of the Sagarmatha National Park, but also offers magnificent 360 ° views of the famous 8000s and numerous other mountain giants of the Khumbu Himal again and again.

The itinerary is designed with a combination of high mountain passes as well as to give you an introductory Nepali culture and tradition. 

One has a option to climb the Island Peak 6189m which needs a basic mountaineering skills. If you do not have, we will offer a training at the base camp.

  • DAY 01:
  • Arrive Kathmandu
  • Your Guide will be waiting for you at the airport with your name sign. Transfer to hotel and take time to adjust against the jetlag. In the evening he will take you for a dinner at a local restaurant and brief on the trek.
  • DAY 02:
  • Flight to Lukla, 2840m and Trek to Phakding 2610m
  • You will be introduced to your local staffs for the first time over lunch at one of the local restaurants. After lunch we will start our first steps towards our three weeks long adventure – EBC & Gokyo. We will hike only 3 hours to get warmed up for the coming days.
  • DAY 03:
  • Phakding to Namche Bazar 3440m
  • After breakfast, the trail begins along the valley with a plenty of exhausting ups and downs until we reach the entrance to Sagarmatha (Everest in Nepali) National Park. After a lunch break, the trail gets serious as we will climb straight away uphill, making the day quite tough considering beginning of the trek. We should arrive at Namche Bazar early afternoon.
  • DAY 04:
  • Acclimatize day & Walk to Hotel 3880m
  • DAY 05: 
  • Namche Bazar to Thame 3820m
  • Today we will walk along a traditional trade route. In contrast to the previous days’ blossoming nature and steep uphill, today’s hike would rather be meditative. The trails ascend slowly, but steadily with a magnificent landscape that change often and constantly.
  • DAY 06:
  • Thame Rest day
  • Today, you will take your time to get up, have a late breakfast and after breakfast a short walk to the one of the oldest monasteries in the country which is build on a mountain slop.
  • DAY 07:
  • Thame to Langden 4368m
  • From here on, we will be walking on the 4000m mark making the landscape absolutely brilliant as the snow Peak Mountains seem more near and clear. After a good breakfast, we start a short and steep climb on the old moraine overlooking beautiful Thame.
  • DAY 08:
  • Lungden 4400m - Renjo La 5360m - Gokyo 4790m 
  • Today you will be introduced to your first pass amongst the three. From Lungden, the trail goes over gentle a slope that leads to a beautiful Relmo Tsho Lake. After the lake, the trail becomes steeper but on a good path takes us to our first Pass, Renjo La 5360m. Right in front of you there will be four 8000’ers waiting for you - Mt.Everest 8848m, Lhotse 8516m, Makalu 8485m & Cho Oyu 8188m and the gigantic summit sea of the Khumbu obviously not to forget.
  • DAY 09:
  • Acclimatization Day. Gokyo Ri View point 5360m
  • Either you can completely take a rest or take a early morning walk to Gokyo Ri, View point. Depending on your mood and condition you can inform your guide a night before.
  • DAY 10:
  • Gokyo to Thangnak 4700m
  • Considering today’s walk is not very long, you have an opportunity to ascent Gokyo Ri. Today you will cross Nepal’s largest and old Ngozumpa Glacier which is easy to cross. If you like crystals, the day is perfect to find some.
  • DAY 11:
  • Thangnak – Chola Pass 5420m - Dzongla 4830m
  • The day involves a steep 2 hours climb on an exhausting trail in the snow over huge boulders that will take you to the top of Cho La Passes, 5420m. The view from the pass will certainly reward your hard walk.
  • DAY 12:
  • Dzongla - Labuche 4910m
  • It’s a short day in a simply in a spectacular landscape as always. We will cross the steep, grassy hill above the blue Tsola Lake and around after reaching the meeting point to EBC trek.
  • DAY 13:
  • Labuche – EBC 5264m - Gorakshep 5140m
  • Today the day to take the challenge physically and mentally! We will get up very early today – 4 am wake up Tea, 4:30 Breakfast and as soon as we are done with BF and packing, we will follow the dried up river where the Khumbu glacier used to lie but has now receded a few kilometers up the mountain. After 2 ½ hours walk, we will reach Gorak Shep, have a break and leave backpacks at a lodge/camp site before gearing up the energy for the last push towards Everest Base Camp.
  • DAY 14:
  • Labuche – Khongma La Pass 5535m - Chhukhung 4730m
  • From here people usually make their way to Lukla but we will go on towards Chhkhung valley. The walk begins slowly but steadily up the valley with a magical view of the Ama Dablam which looks completely different than earlier we have seen, the Island Peak which is also known as Imja Tse, the Baruntse, the Lhotse and Lhotse Shar.
  • DAY 15:
  • Rest Day. Walk to Chhukhung Ri 5550m
  • This will be certainly the morning that will test your condition for the Island Peak summit. We will start our walk around 5 am, the usual starting rhythm might not work today, and therefore we have to make an extra effort. We have to slow down our pace significantly and take breaks frequently. Once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view into the south wall of Nuptse, Lhotse and for the first time the glimpse of Pumori. After spending some time at the top, we will walk back to our lodge/camp site.
  • DAY 16:
  • Chhukhung to Island Peak Base Camp 5100m
  • The day feels relatively easy as we will be walking back to just under 5000m again. And we need a tent and other camping essentials as there will be no lodges for the next two days. Our camp site is located at about 5100 meters close to the huge Imja Lhotse glacier.
  • DAY 17:
  • Pre climb training
  • Our experienced climbing sherpa will give you an introductory training on how to fix ropes, Ice Axe, Harness, Crampons etc. Island Peak do needs basic technical skills like any other 6000ers peak in Nepal.
  • DAY 18:
  • Island Peak summit and back to Chhukhung
  • DAY 19:
  • Chhukhung to Tangbuche 3860m
  • DAY 20:
  • Tangbuche to Monjo 2835m
  • DAY 21:
  • Monjo to Lukla 2840m
  • DAY 22:
  • Fly back to Kathmandu

  • Visa & Entry Formality

    All foreigners, except Indians, must have a valid visa to enter Nepal. Nepali embassies and consulates overseas issue visas without any problem.

    One can also obtain on the spot when you arrive in Nepal, either at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport or at road borders at Nepalganj, Birganj/Raxaul Bazaar, Sunauli, Kakarbhitta, Mahendranagar, Dhangadhi and even at the Kodari checkpoint on the road to Tibet.

    We are required to obtain the trek and climb permit which we will organize for our guests.

  • Level of difficulty


    You will need to be fit, have very good stamina, and be confident that you can trek for some days without a break. You should expect some long days, cold temperatures, high altitudes, and some tough terrain in simply spectacular scenery.
